Learn Squared – Introduction to environnent concept art – week 01

Concept arts is one of my big weakness, with composition. One of my goal for 2016 is to fix this !

It’s always good to get back to the foundations and keep learning, that is why, I enrolled to Maciej Kuciara‘s environment class. I must say, it’s intense to do all the assignements after a workday. No pain, No gain.

Here are some of my sketches for week 01 :

Figure drawing practice

01

I started to practice figure drawing 30mn, every day, since last november. I enjoy this exercice, it is very different from matte paintings and what I do in my work. This routine ends up to be a very relaxing therapy.
Here is a sample of my most recent draws I did those past 2 weeks.

I am currently focus on reproducing the movements of my figures with a minimal use of lines. Using the side of my pencil to play with the shadows and create some volume and constrats became my favorite technique. I am very curious to see where I can push those techniques with more practice.

Book Review : STAR WARS The Force Awakens – Incredible cross-sections

DSC_01233

Star wars being one of the most popular and lucrative licence worldwide, it is no surprise that we see release of quantity of new goodies and artbooks for each episodes.
Despite the fact I was disappointed by the movie, The Force Awakens brought a lot of visual qualities, thanks to the concept artists and the VFX forces who work on it.
As a lover of hard surface models, I particulary liked this cross-sections artbook illustrated by Kemp Remillard.

This large hardcover artbook of 50 pages features some of the spaceships and vehicules present in the movie. Like the previous cross-sections book, the pages are filled by detailed high quality illustrations and close-ups paintings mixed with some sreencaps of the movie.
Every fans of the saga will appreciate the work done that we don’t have time to see on the screen.
It is also interresting to observe how the design evolved since the release of the the first episode (or episode IV, to be precise).

The artworks looks terrifics and Kemp Remillard achieve an massive works with this book. I would recommend this eyecandy to every fans of Star Wars.

Creating an IP – 000

A few months ago, I decide to invest most of my spare time into the creation of my own content, aka IP (intellecrual property).

This bring a lot of questions in my mind. Where to start? What is my universe? What is the story I want to tell ? How do you build a story? What’s make a character compelling? What make a good story?

I am a visual artist. I know how to make beautiful pictures for movies, I know how to draw, but I am totally clueless about storytelling and writing. All I know is that, most of the blockbusters coming from hollywood, nowadays, fail to bring interresting stories to the audience. I personnaly have a hard time to memorize the name of the characters of most of the recent movies I watch. In contrary, when I watch a Pixar movie, they always succeed to touch a part of me. I remember Woody, Buzz, Nemo, Eve, … So this is my point of start. Analysing what Pixar do and apply their « secrets » to my own story.

Digital Pill

It’s a tradition, every new year, I setup new goals. In 2016, I want to become a better artist.

It is always fascinating to learn new things and see your progressions throught the months. So far, I always enjoy to try new softwares, new medium, experimenting various skillsets, sometimes, at the opposite of my main domain. This year, I want to continue to do that, but while being more focus on some specific goals, growing in my mind since a few months now. Starting to share my work, meeting other artists with the same mindset,  learning from them and become a better communicator in general is my starting point for this year.

I create this blog, to keep tract on my explorations and progressions. I will post here, my artworks, some reviews and various thoughts about the VFX industrie, the CG community and my art journey.

2016 seems to be a very exiting year!

Happy new year!
